Fresh Food and Pantry Staples

Opening the refrigerator or cupboard door should not be a stressful experience.  For many families in crisis, it is a daily struggle to decide between food and other bills.

At Fresh Harvest Food Bank, we offer our registered families one visit per month (12 visits per year).  We pack personalized grocery bags full of pantry staples for each family based on their needs and preferences.  When families arrive to pick up their bags, they are greeted by friendly volunteers who guide them through Fresh Harvest’s version of a Farmer’s Market offering a seasonal variety of fresh vegetables, fruits, bread, eggs, and other fresh items.

Weekend Wellness Packs

Fresh Harvest Food Bank works with local schools to provide ‘Weekend Wellness Packs’ to students in need. Currently, 70 ‘Wellness Packs’ are distributed each week along with fresh fruit to a local alternative high school. Too, we happily provide assistance to several other Douglas County schools.

The focus of Fresh Harvest is to provide nutrition to children and families. Currently, in Douglas County Schools, there are approximately 950 homeless students. Because of our close relationships with our schools, we know the value of daily nutrition to help students succeed in the classroom.

Hot Meals

Fresh Harvest Food Bank’s Hot Meal program provides a hearty, healthy meal. Currently, the program serves students at a local alternative high school uniting them “at the table” with staff. Volunteers prepare and serve the meal for 100 plus students each month. We would like to expand the program with other at-risk groups in our community.

Birthday Bags

This is by far our most enjoyed program!  This program is as much for the parents as it is for the children, allowing them to provide a special birthday celebration for their child.  When times are tough, celebrations are often hard to come by.

Our birthday bags are filled with joy!  The excitement of opening a present, blowing out candles, and hearing “Happy Birthday to You,” being sung is what memories are made of.  Fresh Harvest provides everything parents need to create a happy and memorable day. Families find the cake mix and tin, frosting, candles, decorations, wrapping paper, bow, card, and of course a personalized birthday gift from the child’s wish list inside the celebration bag!

School Supplies

Every child deserves the chance to start the new school year off on the right foot.  Fresh Harvest Food Bank partners with many community organizations and businesses to collect school supplies for students in Douglas County.  In 2016, Fresh Harvest Food Bank, in conjunction with many other organizations and amazing community donors, distributed more than 1,000 backpacks full of school supplies!

Educational Workshops

We offer a variety of classes and tools to help our families succeed. These classes also serve as a way for families to connect and help each other achieve their goals.

Families who participate in our hands-on Cooking Matters classes learn to create healthy meals on a budget with food provided at our pantry. In addition, they learn about nutrition and participate in a Supermarket Tour culminating in a challenge to buy ingredients to prepare a healthy dinner for their whole family with a $10 gift card.

Coach Larisa’s Vision Board Workshop offers our families the opportunity to think past their current struggles, create goals, and envision a successful future.

Fresh Harvest Food Bank offers a Coupon Class to teach the basics of couponing and savings stacking in an easy-to-follow format. The class is taught by one of our dedicated coupon team members and couponing tips are also shared by our families.

Seasonal Celebrations

We love to celebrate here at Fresh Harvest Food Bank! Our families enjoy special treats and activities for Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas. We honor all families’ traditions and beliefs and work hard to make each month special.

Clothing

Part of what makes Fresh Harvest Food Bank unique is our clothing bank. We provide clothing, shoes, winter coats, and the occasional baby necessity for the families who walk through our doors. Our families are always very thankful for the opportunity to shop from our racks.

Agency Support

Fresh Harvest Food Bank is both a Food Bank and a Pantry. As a Pantry, we serve the needs of those that seek our assistance for pantry food, fresh produce and toiletry items. As a Food Bank, we are pleased to share and provide support to other local non-profit agencies. We provide fresh food, pantry food and other items to local homeless shelters, task forces, food pantries, and other nonprofit organizations that share our common vision of helping our neighbors in need. Wishlist Grants

Through our WishList Network, wishes of families enduring severe medical, financial or other unforeseen hardship are granted. Wishes are varied and depend on the circumstances specific to the family.
